The first Ferry and Roxy collection to include Bryan's most recent work alongside such group and solo masterpieces as Virginia Plain; Street Life; Love Is the Drug; Avalon; More Than This; A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall; Both Ends Burning; Smoke Gets in Your Eyes; Angel Eyes; Over You; The Same Old Scene; Let's Stick Together (Let's Work Together); Sign of the Times, and more. 45 tracks from the most debonair (and complex) singer in rock.
Along with Queen, Roxy Music started life as a glam band with a heavy prog rock edge before embarking on a long and successful career that saw a variety of musical styles touched upon. And while quite a few single-disc Roxy Music compilations have been released over the years (the best probably being the 1986 collection, Street Life: 20 Greatest Hits), most die-hard Roxy fans would argue that there were far too many highlights that fell through the cracks due to the limitation of a single disc. Hence, the 2004, triple-disc set The Platinum Collection. In conjunction with his Roxy work, singer Bryan Ferry also issued solo albums (which were quite stylistically similar to one another), and both are included in hefty portions here. Although never the superstars in the U.S. that they were in the U.K., Roxy Music and Ferry certainly had the tunes - the early classics "Virginia Plain," "Do the Strand," and "Love Is the Drug" - while latter day tracks as "More Than This," "Avalon," and a cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" (the latter of which was a U.K. chart-topper) showed the group eventually mature into a more mainstream band. The Platinum Collection bridges the gap between the countless single-disc Roxy compilations, and the exhaustive Thrill of It All box set.
Review by Greg Prato,
Originally conceived for the British market, where Roxy Music and its debonair frontman Bryan Ferry were much more popular than in the States, The Platinum Collection gathers every band and Ferry single, along with some popular album tracks, on three chronologically arranged discs. As an overview of both acts' extensive and connected careers, from 1973 through Ferry's 2002 Frantic album, this is a far more comprehensive overview than the many single compilations already released. Initially, there was a substantial musical dissimilarity between lead vocalist Ferry's solo work, much of it less artsy and aggressive than early Roxy songs such as "Do the Strand" and "Virginia Plain." Eventually, by the late 70s the two became less distinct. The primary difference being Ferry's tendency to radically rearrange musty pop, folk, and R&B covers between his more sensually lush, dance oriented music. Roxy Music disbanded in 1983 leaving Ferry, whose solo work comprises almost half of this package and the entire third disc, to carry the torch. Short but pertinent notes about each song, along with small reproductions of the original British picture sleeves, provide some historical background. And although all three CDs include 15 tracks, there is plenty of unused room on each for more music. Regardless, this is an essential addition to any British rock fan's collection. The compilation is nearly as classy and sophisticated as the stylish band, and its suave singer, deserves.
